Where Light and Shadow Dance with Creatures | The "átoa" Theater-Style Aquarium in Kobe
A new attraction, the "átoa" Aquarium, has been added to the Have Fun in Kansai Pass affiliated facilities, offering even more value than the ticket price (general dmission is ¥2,600).
The design of "átoa" is inspired by the aesthetic sense of a theater. The aquarium is crafted like a stage, with each exhibit area functioning as an independent scene. Visitors can experience a journey that feels like being part of a movie or theatrical performance, engaging all five senses through layers of light, shadow, sound, and scent. Here, the creatures are an integral part of the overall art experience.

"MIYABI" is a space where the beauty of Japanese aesthetics is brought to life, with light and shadow changing with time to reflect the beautiful landscapes of the four seasons in Japan. The warm, soft lighting depicts delicate layers of cherry blossoms in spring, greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and winter snow, offering an elegant yet vivid visual experience.
Fish swimming at your feet intersect with this scenery, creating a poetic, scroll-like atmosphere where you can feel the fusion of tranquility and emotion in a traditional Japanese world.

[Spot ②] A World-Class Majestic View! Overlooking the Seto Inland Sea from the Top of the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge.
The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, which spans approximately 4 kilometers, connects Honshu and Awaji Island. Known for its majestic structure and graceful curves, it is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world and is considered a global marvel in the world of suspension bridges.
I participated in the Tower Top Tour this time. The tour was guided by an expert who was involved in the bridge's construction. We walked through maintenance passages that are normally off-limits and climbed to the top of the bridge tower, about 300 meters high. From there, I enjoyed the thrill of the height and the breathtaking panoramic view.
From here, the grand structure of the bridge and the deep blue strait beneath your feet offer a breathtakingly beautiful view. Reflecting on the global-scale construction from this height evokes a deep sense of awe towards human ingenuity and the pursuit of technological advancement.
During the tour, you will also visit the Akashi Kaikyo BRIDGE EXHIBITION CENTER next to the bridge, where you can explore the latest technology and structure used in the bridge's construction through models, videos, and exhibition panels.

[Advanced Edition] Enjoy the Fresh and Sweet Flavors of Akashi Sushi with the "Art of Excellence" Akashi Sushi Coupon
The "Uo no Tana Shopping Street" in Akashi, with a history of about 400 years, is said to have been established during the construction of Akashi Castle.
The arcade stretches approximately 350 meters and is lined with around 100 shops, offering local specialties such as seafood, fish cakes, and dried fish. This area gathers the rich flavors of the sea, with many sushi restaurants and eateries lining the street, making it a perfect place to enjoy Akashi’s fresh and delicious seafood.
For those looking to enjoy local sushi at a great price, we recommend the Akashi Sushi Coupon "Art of Excellence" (included with the Have Fun in Kansai Pass). The coupon comes in three types:

Hidden Delicious Sushi in the Shopping Street — "Shinwa"
This time, I visited "Shinwa." The counter seating has only 8 seats, creating an intimate and homey atmosphere with a perfect balance of distance between the customer and the chef. The chef uses carefully selected local Akashi seafood and showcases exceptional knife skills and unique cooking methods to enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients. Additionally, he tailors the menu to the customer's preferences, and many regulars often order the chef's choice for the day.
I chose a ¥2,000 set and enjoyed it without a prior reservation. The set included 5 pieces of nigiri sushi, 2 sushi rolls, sashimi, a small side dish, and miso soup. Although the ingredients change with the seasons, the quality and taste remain consistently excellent.
PLACE: Shinwa
Address: 1-1-20 Honmachi, Akashi City, Hyogo
Access: A 3-minute walk from JR or Sanyo Akashi Station
Closed: Mondays
Hours: 12:00 PM – 9:30 PM

Additionally, by climbing to the top of the castle tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city of Himeji. When illuminated at night, Himeji Castle takes on an even more mysterious and romantic atmosphere. Whether during the day or night, you’ll be captivated by the unique charm of this World Heritage site.

Unique Local Delicacies with Distinct Flavors – Himeji Oden and Vegan-Friendly "Katsumeshi"
Oden is a common homemade dish across Japan, but in Himeji, it is served in a completely unique way—with ginger soy sauce. This distinctive aroma and flavor are highly popular, making it one of Himeji’s signature local delicacies. The taste is light and refreshing, stimulating the appetite, while the ingredients are thoroughly infused with rich flavors.
At the izakaya "Gonta", located just near the station, you can enjoy Himeji-style oden, carefully simmered to perfection.
This restaurant offers a wide variety of vegan-friendly menu options. For example, it serves a plant-based version of "Katsumeshi," a local specialty from Kakogawa City, Hyogo. Traditionally, this dish consists of beef cutlet over rice, topped with demi-glace sauce and served with boiled cabbage, but here, it is made without meat. This allows everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions, to enjoy delicious food while experiencing the town's historic atmosphere.
Conclusion
By making the most of the JR-WEST RAIL PASS and the Kansai! Have Fun Pass, you can effortlessly explore Kobe, Akashi, and Himeji. Start your journey with the mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow at the "átoa" theater-style aquarium, then ascend the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, an architectural marvel, to take in the breathtaking Seto Inland Sea views.
